This year as I was organizing my own binder system for my resources, an idea entered my brain. Why not use the same strategy to help my students organize their notebooks? Voilá! Tabbing was born.
I did not want to invest lots of my precious school money into buying tabs, but I had these wonderful, little, flashcards. I have also used some index cards. I simple cut them to a usable size.
Next, students write a label on the tab. (Example: In our writing notebook, we labeled a place for ideas, drafts, and tools. In our Content Notebook, we labeled a section for Landforms, Water Features, and recently add a tab for Rocks and Minerals.)
Then, the student (and you may have to help at first) puts the tabs with one side on each side of the paper.
Finally, place a piece of tape on each side to hold it down. You've just tabbed your notebook.
If you're like me, you will wonder why you haven't always been using tabs. Happy notebooking!
